Venturing to new horizons


Yesterday marked the end of our class journey, a moment tinged with sweetness and sorrow. The subjects we delved into during our sessions proved captivating, to say the least. At the outset, the purpose of our Futurism class eluded me; it wasn't until the fourth week that its true essence began to dawn on me. For me, Futurism transcended mere speculation on the accuracy of past predictions. Instead, it became a catalyst for molding our minds to embrace the unknown and navigate the uncharted territories of tomorrow.

Sometimes, the most groundbreaking discoveries and advancements arise from chance encounters, unexpected mistakes, and the creative reuse of existing ideas. This post delves into three key concepts that fuel this often unpredictable journey: serendipity, errors, and exaptation. By exploring real-world examples and personal experiences, we can better understand how these forces propel progress.


Serendipity: The Happy Accident

Serendipity denotes the fortunate discovery of something valuable while not actively seeking it. The chance encounter sparks genius, the unexpected turn that leads to a breakthrough. Consider Alexander Fleming's discovery of penicillin. In 1928, he accidentally left a petri dish containing bacteria open, only to find mold had grown, killing the surrounding microbes. This "mistake" led to the development of the world's first antibiotic, revolutionizing medicine and countless lives. In my experience, serendipity struck during a brainstorming session for a marketing campaign. We were stuck, but a casual conversation about a recent movie sparked a connection, leading to a viral campaign that exceeded expectations. Serendipity reminds us that sometimes, the most valuable treasures lie just beyond our planned path, waiting to be stumbled upon with an open mind and curiosity.


Error: The Unexpected Spark

Not all errors are failures. Sometimes, they become the unexpected sparks that ignite innovation. Take the case of Teflon, the non-stick coating found on millions of pans. Roy Plunkett, a DuPont scientist, accidentally discovered its remarkable properties while trying to create a new refrigerant. He noticed a strange, slippery polymer formed during an experiment, leading to the development of a material that changed the kitchen landscape. In my personal life, learning a new software program led to an accidental shortcut that streamlined my workflow. While frustration lingered after the initial mistake, it ultimately paved the way for a more efficient process. Errors force us to re-evaluate and think outside the box and can reveal hidden potentials waiting to be unlocked.


Exaptation: The Creative Repurpose

Exaptation describes repurposing a feature or trait for a new and unforeseen function. Once a modified forelimb for running, the bird's wing took flight. Likewise, Velcro, initially designed for burrs stuck to hunting dogs' fur, is now ubiquitous in clothing and beyond. In technology, Bluetooth, initially conceived for connecting headsets, now powers a vast array of wireless devices. In my creative writing, an abandoned character sketch from a previous project unexpectedly found its way into a new story, adding depth and complexity to the narrative. Exaptation reminds us that innovation often lies in looking at existing things with fresh eyes, breathing new life into ideas that may seem irrelevant at first glance.


Conclusion

Serendipity, errors, and exaptation are not random occurrences but crucial drivers of innovation. They highlight the importance of embracing the unexpected, learning from mistakes, and creatively repurposing what already exists. How does scenario planning support innovation and adaptation?

Challenges assumptions: Forecasting often reinforces existing biases and blind spots. Scenarios, by exploring contrasting futures, stimulate creative thinking and challenge fixed assumptions, paving the way for disruptive innovations.

Identifies opportunities and threats: Scenarios illuminate potential risks and disruptions, allowing proactive strategies to mitigate threats and capitalize on emergent opportunities. For instance, the newspaper industry could have explored scenarios beyond gradual decline, anticipating the explosive growth of online news and adapting business models accordingly.

Improves decision-making: By considering multiple futures, decision-makers are better equipped to formulate flexible and resilient strategies to weather unforeseen circumstances. Scenarios offer a lens to test existing strategies under different assumptions, leading to more robust and adaptable plans.

AI Image

 Adding some visual content to my blog, and playing with AI, I asked it to generate an image of a Go board, a Chinese board game. Below is what I got as a response:



While the image is visually appealing, the board lines are irregular and the writing is not present in actual boards. It should be noted that this was not the only invalid response I received - in fact, all four responses to my prompt had similar errors.

What fascinates me about this exercise is that nowhere on the internet did I find an image which contained similar errors, meaning that AI would have to be the one that incorrectly interpreted the input it received OR it incorrectly "projected" what a Go board would look like.

Planning for Week 5

While I have yet to complete the IP 1 for the current week, I decided to go ahead and start planning both DB for week 5 given the fact that I will be in transit during the week and may have challenges connecting to the internet.

I will be on a couple of flights, totaling over 23 hours, and my plan is to purchase WiFi access. However, that is conditional on the airline having it available and it not being excessively expensive.

The manager used the Delphi technique with the organization's top 50 people, utilizing questionnaires to rate various options, leading to a decision to launch the business in Germany, as it received the most consensus (ProjectPractical.com, n.d.).

In contrast, the consensus method involves collaborative decision-making, where all group members contribute to the final decision. This approach was exemplified in a technology company's IT department selecting a new software system. The team discussed various software options, considered different viewpoints, and brainstormed solutions, eventually reaching a consensus on the most suitable software (Sharma, 2023). Another example is a marketing agency selecting a team lead for a project. Through discussions about each member's strengths and expertise and addressing concerns about workload, the team collectively agreed on the most suitable individual to lead the project (Sharma, 2023). Additionally, an HR department planning a company retreat demonstrated this method by brainstorming ideas, sharing personal preferences, and addressing budget concerns, ultimately reaching a consensus on the retreat's theme and activities (Sharma, 2023).

Both methods aim to enhance group decision-making but differ significantly in their approach and outcomes. The Delphi technique is systematic and relies on the expertise of selected individuals, making it suitable for situations where expert opinions are crucial. The consensus method is more inclusive and democratic, allowing for the participation of all group members, which can lead to greater satisfaction and acceptance of the decision. While the Delphi technique is efficient in reaching a decision quickly, the consensus method tends to take longer but can result in decisions that have wide support and buy-in from all group members.
